Located by the St. Lawrence River, facing the islands bearing its name, the village of Verchères is marked with history. It was founded in 1672 and throughout the years, it was unfortunately one of the villages that were most coveted by the Iroquois during their attacks. Madeleine de Verchères is famous for repelling an attack led by the Iroquois during eight days when she was only fourteen years old. A statue has been erected in her honour in the village in 1913 and it is said to be the largest bronze monument in Canada.
Several tourist attractions can be found in this village, like the Moulin banal, built in 1734; the federal quay, where inhabitants and visitors like to walk; the parc des Pionniers where you can have a picnic or admire the sunsets and finally the Verchères islands, which are Île Marie, Île Bouchard and Île aux Prunes. Take the time to visit the old part of the village, where you will find the historic church as well as the workers'wooden houses. You can also take with you the document "À la découverte du vieux Verchères" (Discovering Old Verchères), which will help you find your way in the village and give you information about its history.
