One of the Most Beautiful Cities of Québec
The city of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu was created in 1890 under the name of Saint-antoine-de-Padoue. Later, it took the name we know today. The name of the city comes from Antoine Pécaudy de Contrecoeur, who received the seigniory that corresponds now to the territory of the actual city.
As early as 1724, agriculture is part of the everyday life of the inhabitants of this town. In 1763, Acadians came to settle in the area. Later, two important people made the city famous: George-Étienne Cartier, who was one of the founders of the Confederation, and Eulalie Durocher, founder of the congregation of the Soeurs des Saints-Noms-de-Jésus-et-de-Marie.
