In the 1800s, while the industry of wood products is at its height in Quebec, it was decided to export the industry's by-product towards the United States. However, the numerous rapids of the Richelieu River were slowing down the exportation by river. To make this navigation less perilous, nine locks on Chambly Canal were created allowing the merchandise to reach its destination far more easily.
Though still working nowadays, those locks are mostly used by the many sailors who wish to sail between Chambly Basin and Lake Champlain. You can also visit the installations surrounding Chambly Canal and watch each lock's bridges at work and several small houses used in the days by the lock masters. In summer, ride along the canal by bike and in winter, you can just skate on it. An attraction to discover!
