The Saint-Ours Canal, along with the Chambly Canal, holds a great importance in the North American waterway system allowing navigation through the St. Lawrence River, the Richelieu River, Lake Champlain and the Hudson River. The Canal makes it thus possible to reach New York from Montreal by water. Known as the tenth lock of the Richelieu, the Canal has been for more than a century an essential element to the local and international trade development. Today, the Canal opens the gates of its lock mainly to amateur sailors and yachtmen who can enjoy a great navigation on the Richelieu River. For other visitors, the Saint-Ours Canal offers lots of summer activities in a splendid setting perfect for a picnic on the waterside.
